DeLorme Professional Newsletter January 2011
Expanding the Reach of GIS

Notes from the XMap Desk

EarthaAs the new year begins, we take time to look over our shoulder at the year that has been and look forward to the challenges ahead. For DeLorme, 2010 was a great year. The ongoing development of the Earthmate PN-Series GPS receivers consolidated DeLorme's position as a key participant in this industry and the company's collaboration with SPOT culminated in the incorporation of the remarkable SPOT satellite communication tool. The XMap brand continued to make inroads into the energy, government, and other fields, providing an unparalleled mobile GIS solution. But perhaps the most significant development of the last year has been the emergence of DeLorme as a leading provider of map data for North America and for the world - ensuring that DeLorme's renowned maps are available to as wide an audience as possible.

With 2011 upon us, another significant milestone has arrived for DeLorme. Effective Monday, January 3rd, Mike Heffron took the reins of the company as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mike brings to the company a wealth of executive-level experience in government contracting and is ideally suited to lead the company in the years to come. An engineer by training, he was most recently President of the EI&S Operating Group for BAE Systems.

Press Release: DeLorme Selects Mike Heffron as New President and CEO.

On behalf of everyone at DeLorme, we would like to wish you and yours warmest wishes for a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

XMap at Work - Eagle Information Mapping, Inc Offers Earthmate PN-Series For GIS Data Gathering

XMap at WorkFor almost twenty years, Houston-based Eagle Information Mapping, Inc. has been providing GIS and mapping services to the oil and gas Industry. Recognizing the value in a low-cost GIS data collector, they recently added the Earthmate PN-Series GPS receiver and XMap Forms capability to their list of products and services.

During a recent conversion I asked Vice President Tracy Thorleifson why his company decided to start offering XMap and the PN.

XMap Advice - Customizing the Base Map in XMap

XMap Advice One of the benefits of vector mapping is that select features can be removed or added to the map display. Users of XMap can take advantage of this flexibility to customize the topographic base map in such a way that it accentuates a particular feature or clarifies the display of imported data layers.

This article describes the process for creating a unique map using selected features in the DeLorme-provided base map and explains how a custom map can be saved as an XMap project file.

XMap Q & A - How do I set up my Earthmate PN-60w and SPOT Satellite Communicator?

XMap Question and Answer In a recent edition of the DeLorme Professional Newsletter, we announced the availability of the latest edition of the Earthmate PN-Series GPS receiver, the PN-60w, and described how it can be used in conjunction with the SPOT Satellite Communicator to transmit messages from virtually anywhere on the planet. The response has been overwhelming. Emergency services, relief organizations, foresters, military personnel, and mobile technicians of every type have been quick to recognize the value of this innovative product.

This month we show how easy it is to set up the PN and SPOT devices and, with a salute to the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, we let the following video do the talking.

XMap Spotlight

The striking topography of the low Appalachian Mountains in southern Pennsylvania is the focus of this month's XMap spotlight offering. This vestige of an ancient mountain range, whose peaks were once higher than the present day Himalayas, is evidence of the relentless erosive power of the natural elements.

The seemly symmetrical pattern of interlocking valleys and ridges is clearly seen in the adjacent topographic map, but click for a larger view and you'll see XMap's secondary map brings the terrain to life in a stunning 3-D aerial image.

The data represented in this map is DeLorme's North America Topographic Data 2011, available with all XMap 7 bundles. This map dataset is now also available in raster format, so you can incorporate the same Maps into many other mapping applications.

The accompanying aerial image was downloaded using XMap's MapPack subscription service in the software's NetLink tab.
