Mapping Conservation Areas
Problem:
For non-profit organizations with limited resources, keeping a lid on costs is extremely important. Such is the case with a small environmental conservation group based in northern Maine. Given that they collaborate with numerous state and local organizations, it is essential that they have access to maps and data showing both the areas under their jurisdiction and areas under the jurisdiction of other groups. With none of the organization’s volunteers trained in the management of a Geographic Information System and GIS consultants fees beyond the reach of their budget, they need to find a mapping tool that has the features they need, is affordable, and is easy to learn.
Solution:
With XMap 5.0 GIS Editor, a fully functional GIS can be developed in a short period of time by people with little or no experience in the field. Volunteers quickly learn how to access existing GIS data layers and import them into XMap 5.0 GIS Editor. A shapefile containing current conservation lands is imported and classified to display ownership of each conservation area. Polygons can be easily edited, added or removed as the status of each conservation area changes. The organization now has an efficient tool to help manage their properties and easements and even has plans to share their maps online using XMap’s Web publishing tools.
