And Thank You!
...Search & Rescue Professionals, for being there when the call comes in.
Search & Rescue Tools within XMap
Use XMap as your Incident Command Post mapping application to support search and rescue operations. XMap is ideal for preplanning scenarios so SAR teams are always ready. During SAR operations XMap can be used to collect field data such as Point Last Seen (PLS) and Last Known Point (LKP) and areas searched to constantly update the search process based on clues found and for redistribution of progression maps to the next search team shift. After suspension of a SAR operation, use XMap to critique the process and utilize the knowledge gained for future operations.
Data Options
DeLorme Digital Maps include Topographic Data with trails and land use data of the entire USA. With our $29.95 annual subscription Library Card, download digital USGS Topo Quad maps (as preferred by most SAR teams), high-resolution color imagery, NOAA marine navigation charts, and more.
Import a variety of Aerial Imagery formats, like MrSID and GeoTIFF, for alternative views of terrain in remote locations. View imagery in 3-D for line-of-sight simulations. Compare imagery to other map data resources using split-screen views. Drop instant waypoints to identify key mission locations.
Use XMap to create custom grid options. Tailor your grid to the type of search you are managing – aerial, on foot, onfoot with canine, or dive search. Export the search grid sub areas to the PN-40 for use in the field.
GIS Support
XMap GIS titles offer full-featured GIS support including shapefile creation, edit, import and export to allow the use of rich municipal data during SAR operations. Build search grids and spatial queries. Import and display GIS layers against aerial imagery or scanned maps. Share GIS queries with your search teams.
Printed Maps
XMap supports print formats to generate exactly the size planning maps you need. Monitor mission progress within XMap and reprint for group updates. Plan search areas in the field with detailed plotter maps. Scan paper maps into digital format and accurately register these maps over topographic map data.
GPS Tracking
Log search trails using a variety of GPS devices. Play back GPX log files against maps and imagery. Share GPS track files of clue-found locations, searched areas, or other critical GPS points. Quickly switch between Degrees/Minutes and UTM coordinate grids as needed to direct Helicopter operations. XMap supports the US National Grid – the standard emergency management grid system in the USA.
XMap works seamlessly with an Earthmate PN-40 device as the ideal handheld field GPS solution. Cut custom map packages that include multiple layers of map data and transfer them to the PN-40. View aerial imagery, USGS Topo Quads and GIS layers in the field. Team members can transfer tracks and waypoint data to the incident map on their return from the field. Waypoints can be called in via radio when critical clues are found, in order to redirect search resources or a Rescue Helicopter for pickup.
SAR Draw Tools
  • Use circle draw tools to define search probability areas on the maps. Snap to center makes it easy to draw concentric circles of increasing search radius.
  • Estimate lost person direction of travel—based on terrain, ground cover, LKP and clues found.
  • Utilize an included waypoint symbol set based on the standard Incident Command System (ICS) for consistency across operational resources.
  • Manage multiple map layers to communicate incident briefings, situation plans, transportation, aviation, and progression maps.
With color imagery, USGS topo quads and GIS, the XMap/PN-40 package delivers the most comprehensive data choices available for search and rescue missions.
