YARMOUTH, Maine — DeLorme, the innovation leader in GPS and mapping technology, today introduced the GPS2056 Receiver Module for OEM electronic systems.
Based on the STMicroelectronics STA2056 GPS receiver chip, the GPS2056 module provides superior performance from a small 25x25 mm footprint. The module contains the entire GPS position engine, including LNA, SAW filter, GPS baseband receiver, oscillators, and power conditioning.
With all these subsystems in one package, it’s easy to include GPS position-based features in any electronic system. Manufacturers simply add an external antenna, serial communications, and power source.
This full-featured module is ideal for designers without extensive RF or GPS expertise, and for minimizing design risk in tight time-to-market projects.
“A DeLorme-branded GPS module is a logical extension of our expertise in GPS hardware and mapping software,” said Dave Eshelman, DeLorme president. “The GPS2056 represents a low-cost, low-risk solution for companies wanting to integrate GPS into their equipment.”
Applications include asset tracking, navigation, and distributed systems that require synchronized timing, such as clock systems or seismic monitoring.
“STMicroelectronics is very excited with DeLorme’s decision to enter the GPS module business” said Jefferey Wilson, STMicroelectronics Technical Marketing Manager. “The DeLorme GPS Module using the ST GPS chip is an ideal solution for low to mid volume OEM systems, opening new markets to STMicroelectronics for our GPS solutions, and also for all the additional ST silicon content on the host side of the system.”
DeLorme is offering a complete evaluation kit that can be used for development or as a reference design. The kit is a complete plug-and-play GPS navigation system, including a circuit board with a GPS2056 module, a USB cable, power adapter, active antenna, and Street Atlas USA® 2007 software.
The GPS2056 unit cost is $21 in 1,000 unit quantities. The Evaluation Kit sells for $495, and is available from www.delorme.com/gpsmodules.
The STMicroelectronics GPS receiver technology is also the GPS engine for two new DeLorme consumer products, the Earthmate GPS PN-20 handheld receiver, and the Earthmate GPS BT-20 for Bluetooth-enabled PDAs and USB laptop PCs.
