YARMOUTH, Maine — DeLorme, the leading digital mapping, software, and GPS provider, today announced that its popular Street Atlas USA 2008 software will run on Ultra Mobile Personal Computers (UMPCs). Company representatives will offer demonstrations at the upcoming PEPCOM Digital Experience! 2008 press event in Las Vegas on Sunday evening, January 6th.
“UMPCs are an excellent option for people looking for multi-purpose laptop PCs that can also serve as in-vehicle navigation systems using our Street Atlas USA 2008 software,” comments Caleb Mason, DeLorme Marketing Director. “The screen size is larger than most personal navigation devices (PNDs), which is important for geographic information visibility in-vehicle, and unlike PNDs, ultra-mobile PCs possess the necessary computing power to take advantage of the many rich features of our Street Atlas USA software.”
In order to optimize Street Atlas USA 2008 for UMPCs, DeLorme had to make changes to how its maps and interface appear on the UMPC’s smaller footprint. The DeLorme software is an excellent option for UMPCs in that it does not use an overlapping Windows architecture, which avoids the challenges of selecting and deselecting many windows while navigating. Street Atlas USA 2008 keeps the map front and center at all times and also has large easy-to-read controls for initiating the important functions of the software. These include voice navigation, voice commands (you speak, it responds), and the ability to add new local roads directly to the maps as they are built.
DeLorme Software, GPS and Map-Making Expertise
DeLorme offers a unique set of core competencies across the complex areas of map data creation and management, software development, and integration within GPS technologies. This ability to understand and develop all the critical components necessary to compete in the fast-changing world of GPS and digital mapping provides DeLorme with a unique competitive advantage. The company is one of a handful of mapmakers who still own and produce their own content.
DeLorme is interested in meeting with UMPC hardware providers to discuss including the DeLorme software and mapping databases directly on UMPCs. Street Atlas USA 2008 currently includes street-level detail for the U.S. and Canada, with highways and major roads for Mexico. The software also includes over four million places of interest and is also available in a PLUS version that adds 150 million residential and business phone listings, all of which are searchable and locatable on detailed DeLorme maps.
