YARMOUTH, Maine — FiberNext, a fiber optic technology firm located in Bow, NH, recently selected DeLorme XMap software to create a major spatial inventory of utility poles between Bangor and Bar Harbor, ME.
XMap is an affordable, easy-to-use GIS software suite that integrates advanced geospatial data management into DeLorme's core GPS mapping framework.
“With its unique combination of GIS and GPS functionality, XMap is an ideal solution for field applications and mobile data collection, FiberNext’s project being just the most recent example,” said Keith Gray, Account Manager at DeLorme.
After receiving a custom training program on XMap's data collection and processing capability, as well as its integrated GPS navigation functionality, FiberNext field technicians were able to quickly go to work creating the pole database.
With an Earthmate GPS receiver attached to an in-vehicle laptop computer, the team visited each pole, created a point object on the map, and entered the relevant information on each pole in the preconfigured data fields. Within a matter of days, over 1,600 poles had been mapped and an extensive database of pole attributes had been collected and processed.
"There's no way we could have completed this project without XMap", said to Rhonda Salvail, the project coordinator. "It offered all of the tools we needed and was very easy to learn."
